don't touch me please, i cannot stand the way you tease

Another week, another post. I decided to do first reactions to this season's anime shows that I'm currently following. I'm not particularly spoilery with my reactions but I've placed them under cuts just in case.

Kill La Kill
This show is making so, so, SO MAD. I mean on one hand, I like the plot concept. I'm intrigued by the fucked up school and what it's trying to say about society. I really like the characters. And I like the animation. On the other hand, everything that everyone has been saying about the sexism and disturbing fanservice in the show is absolutely true. I watched the first half of the first episode excited and intrigued by the story! I watched the second half of the first episode horrified at blatant exploitation of Ryuko and Mako! And it's pretty much been that way for the second and third episodes. Anything that I've enjoyed has been pretty much ruined by the treatment of the heroine. I mean, do the writers even know she's their heroine? Why the constant degradation?

I mean, okay, I like sexy characters designs. Who doesn't like sexy character designs? I have no problems with them for either male or female characters. But the ridiculous, uncomfortable, and embarrassing outfit that Ryuko is forced to put on in order to fight is not sexy. It's the opposite of sexy. And the thing is, it wouldn't take too many changes to make it less embarrassing! But no, Trigger is going to "push the envelope" or something. I'm just so disappointed and mad with this show because it has so much potential. We've got two interesting, dynamic female leads battling it out in fine shounen style but the writers and artists won't even give the respect that their counterpart male leads would normally be given. BLEH.

Someone pointed out that this could be just a set-up for a tear-down later. But...I just don't see any signs of it yet. I might try to hang on for another couple of episodes to see if there is any improvement but I won't keep horrifying myself out of nostalgia for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Kuroko's Basketball
When the first season of this anime finished, I had read all the chapters of the manga that had been released. Of course, I don't remember one lick of it (except for the scissor thing, that's kinda hard to forget) so I'm pretty much watching the second season with a blank slate. So far, I'm enjoying it! The opening credits are particularly pretty and I may have to make some icons of Kuroko. I'm hoping for some more team shenanigans because that's the sort of thing I enjoy. I still like Kuroko a thousand times better than Kamui and find it hilarious when the height disparty between then is pointed out.

Uh, there's really nothing else special to say. Guess I exhausted a lot of my opinions with Kill La Kill?

Ace of the Diamond
Can't say that I'm too impressed at this point. There's nothing that endears me to the main protagonist yet, although I've only watched two episodes. I'm getting the feeling that this story is classic overpowered sports manga, with baseball prodigies dominating at this new school that...the main protagonist is attending, dammit, I can't even remember his name. I like the design of the catcher with his sunglasses? I'll keep watching for awhile yet but so far Oofuri so outclasses this in my mind that there's almost no comparison.

Yowapeda
Now, THIS I like! I've only seen the first episode (I watch on Crunchyroll and don't have a paid account) but I really enjoyed it. I immediately enjoyed the protagonist and his anime nerd tendencies and honestly, liking a character that much upon first viewing pretty much sells the show for me. I'm interested in how he gets into the cycling club and I want to learn more about the other cyclists. Not really much more to say about it after just a first episode but I can't wait to watch the second.

Upon reflection, I can't remember the main character's name of this one either, just like with Ace of the Diamond. Maybe I'm being too hard on AotD? But I just liked the anime nerd guy so much while I could take or leave the pitcher.

Also, I got my Yuletide assignment and I'm relieved. The prompt is something that I can definitely do and, in fact, I've already got a decent idea brewing. It needs some more work before I can begin to actively work on it...like coming up with an ending. (Endings are the absolutely bane of my creative process.) But! All in all, I feel pretty confident! Plus, I have about two months to write at least 1,000 words, which shouldn't be too hard. (I say now. Watch me totally stall on it in December.)

Yeah.... I love sexy character designs but the first episode of Kill La Kill made me so uncomfortable, I couldn't keep watching. This is even after people told me to expect it! I guess I just didn't think the fanservice to be so disturbingly exploitative and... nonconsensual? And I'm someone who liked Tenjou Tenge!
