i'd love to be twisted, utterly twisted
Multi-fandom post attempt! And this time, I shall properly cut each series/book so that I don't inadvertently spoil anyone. I try to be a lady, except when I forgot to.
Blood of Tyrants by Naomi Novik
Ooooooookay. So I liked this book! It wasn't the best in the series (Throne of Jade, you will forever be my number one) but it wasn't the worst by a long shot (Tongues of Serpents, which I still can't remember the plot of despite haven't read it twice).
But the thing is...I know Naomi came from fandom. We all know she came from fandom. She's not new to fanfiction and she appears, through her series, to be writing seriously and not tongue-in-cheek. So I really can't understand her including amnesia into this book. Especially giving William Laurence amnesia. Of all the characters to give amnesia to, it just doesn't work with him. I kept waiting during the first half of the book for him to get over his amnesia (as we all knew he would) so the plot could move forward. Why include such a trite plot, by fanfiction and regular fiction standards?
Unless it was just to hilariously have William have to deal with Granby coming out to him again. Which, while hilarious, wasn't worth the set-up.
Silver Spoon
I am so so so so SO in love with this series, it's not even funny. I know it's getting a second season which makes me over-the-moon happy, although it won't begin until January (boo!). I'm glad that it's popular too. It seems like such an odd concept to get a series, a farming anime, but it's done so thoughtfully and well. And with my recent interest in food and the production of it, it's informative too. I think it has an important perspective, the perspective of the farmer. And not just one type of farmer, different types of farmer (highly automated, mid-size, and struggling). It shows different types of opinion regarding food. And yes, the characters are fun too, despite me getting continual flashback to FMA due to the similarity in character designs.
I also really want to know more about the main character of the series and his backstory. I'm trying to decide if I want to read the manga or wait for the second season. I've always enjoyed anime more than manga and I've found that reading the manga lessens the experience of watching the anime...but! I wanna know! *anime watcher problems*
Attack on Titan
Hoooooooooly crap, another series that I'm contemplating reading the manga for since I heard that a second season probably won't happen for awhile due to a lack of of enough source material. But seriously. SERIOUSLY. The animation and music alone in this series are enough to make me watch it avidly but I love the characters to. I don't really have a favorite one per se, they all just combine into one big glob of gravity-defying, titan-kicking awesome.
I read a comment on randomc.net where someone said that this series is like a traditional shounen series gone wrong and that? Is a really good description. Everything goes wrong for the characters in this series, despite their *~*convictions*~*, it's almost like watching a train wreck. BUT THEY KEEP PERSEVERING FOR HUUUUUMANITY BECAUSE FREEEEEDOM. Or something. I could see that Annie was the female titan from quite a ways away (she was the only character who wasn't in the scout troop with enough screen time to be it) but I'm not bothered. Because the animation! The music! The characters! And again, like Silver Spoon, I really want to know what's happening, Annie's backstory, her motivations, and just what the fuck is up with humans turning into titans anyways?! I wanna knooooooow...
Team Human by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan
*slooooooooow claps* Wow. I think this is the first vampire novel that I've read that I didn't hate from the outset! Which is really an big deal. I dithered on reading this book since I tend to not care for vampires in general but I trust that Justine and Sarah would do it okay. Plus, the summary that it is a tongue-in-cheek writing of a vampire novel sold me.
It was really interesting! And since it was so short, I was able to blow through it in a day, which speaks to how well it kept me engaged. I don't know if I'll reread it much because while I liked it, I didn't love it. But really? First novel where I didn't hate the vampires. LIFE ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED.
Aaaaand we're getting into television season again! So much is happening before the end of this year. Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special and Christmas Special, Allegiant by Veronica Roth, Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch, Community, Parks and Rec, Elementary, new anime season, Sleepy Hollow, and probably more that I'm forgetting. So much media to consume, I feel rather spoiled.

Silver Spoon and SnK! Looking forward to both second seasons, whenever the latter happens. \o/
