For other cleaning needs, Bon Ami powder is a good classic product! I use it to scrub the bathtub and kitchen sink and countertops, and it works like a dream to get out most stains. And for hand-cleaning more delicate things like necklaces or earrings, a paste of cream of tartar and vinegar does a fine job of getting off tarnish and oil/sweat/makeup residue.

On a more general note, though, I think that it's depressingly easy to beat yourself up about how bad your own actions are for the environment. I mean, there's only so much that we can do with the infrastructure we're given. We didn't make our auto-centric culture that doesn't allow most people to walk or take public transport to the shops and other services they need. The area I live in doesn't give me any way to compost vegetable scraps and tea leaves and coffee grounds, which I'd do in a heartbeat. I don't have a balcony or enough open space or indoor sunlight to grow a decent herb garden. I think it's just a matter of doing things as best you can, whether it's using a Kill-a-Watt meter (my local library has them for borrowing!) to check appliance energy usage, or not using the dryer for anything but heavy stuff like sheets and towels, or being good about using up leftovers and not buying more food than you'll really need. It's a drop in the bucket, comparatively speaking, but it's still one drop less.
